Work programme:

WP 0:

The objective of this WP is to ensure the monitoring of the progress of the project and the coordination among the WP leaders to achieve the project objectives in due time. Another key function of this WP is reporting the project development to the PEB/Project Managers and to the CEDR TG on Road Safety and to receive feedback from both on the same. This will ensure that the final product meets the expectations of the NRAs.

WP 1:

This WP aims at presenting a complete overview of currently used APMs by different national road administrations (NRAs) in Europe and worldwide, as well as the currently used data sources for the development and application of APMs. More specifically, this WP aims at reviewing and assessing existing APMs, in terms of theoretical approaches, characteristics of models in use, implementation conditions, data requirements and available results, with focus on motorways and higher ranked rural roads. On the basis of a questionnaire dispatched to European NRAs and a literature review, an inventory of APMs and related data sources will be created, allowing to identify the most useful and potentially transferable models.

WP 2:

The objective of this WP is to provide a review of recent and salient literature related to the CMFs, including the background and development of the CMFs, various methods for developing the CMFs, and key issues in the application of the CMFs. This WP also aims at identifying the needs and significance for the development and application of the CMFs. Key CMFs which has not been fully studied or omitted in the literature will be investigated and, if possible, developed in this WP.

WP 3:

The aim of this WP is to create a Guideline for the implementation of selected accident prediction models for rural freeways and two lane rural highways and for the evaluation of the transferability of these models to a given road network. The Guideline will include a section on the models description as well as numerical examples and a guidance for the development of CMF. The Guideline will be complemented by an easy to use computer based tool.

WP 4:

WP 4 will ensure the development of a repository for APMs and CMFs to be used within the PRACT project and afterwards. The main objectives of WP 4 are to provide an overview about existing APMs and CMFs, their application and boundary conditions of transferability as well as a systematic tool to classify and sort different CMFs and APMs.

WP 5:

The main objectives of WP 5 are to communicate the role of accident prediction models as a risk-based approach for safety management and the implementation of the project guidance document in preventive safety management. Moreover the distribution of knowledge about safety risk and road design to prevent serious accidents before they occurs and expertise about the safety impact of possible countering measures at accident burdened roads is intended. A target group for the dissemination activities will be established including road administrations, experts for road safety and researchers. Considering the specificity of this project a variety of communication channels will be used, including on-line, electronic and printed communication channels and publications as well as a final project meeting to present the results.
